We work to expand the leadership capacity of our members
to enable them to make influential contributions to their community
locally, nationally and internationally. BPW believes that increasing
the number and quality of women leaders improves our ability to
make life better for all women.
Club President's Page
A growing membership is an indicator of a pro-active,
market-oriented, forward-looking and caring management. With this
in mind a Club President can improve her leadership skills as
a member of BPW. Members meeting at the next International Congress
in Lucerne, will discuss the theme "New Dimensions of Leadership".
Feedback from the Forum
Club Presidents, Secretaries and Presidents met
together for an enjoyable working weekend. The following is one
Clubs feedback from the Forum. Pease feel free to submit comments
and feedback about the Forum and any photographs to technology@bpwnz.org.nz
Feedback re Leadership forum - February 20th
to 21st held at Price Waterhouse Coopers Offices, 113 The Terrace
Attending - Jacqui Miles, Winsome Duncan (representing
Kapiti) and Vanessa Simpson - Vanessa (in her capacity as National
Treasurer).
There were approximately 20 Presidents, Secretaries
and Treasurers at the meeting.
The Saturday started with a greeting from Angela our National
President after which we all introduced ourselves and spoke briefly
about this.
The business kicked off with an introductory keynote
speaker - Pip Jamieson from Nelson who spoke about - "What's
a Girl to do. The Glass Cliff", opening her address by asking
if we knew the difference between the words Feminine and Feminist
leaders.
Having jotted down our ideas, we were asked to first
identify the words defining feminine leaders. The words that came
out of this were passionate, inclusive, consultative, soft approach,
gentle, personable, pacifist, natural.
For the words feminist leader, the words were strong,
unafraid, aggressive, confrontational, overtly pro women, advocate
for women's rights, logical, sequential.
Pip recently set out to determine if discernible
differences did exist between a woman's feminine or feminist leadership
styles in the hope of providing New Zealand women leaders the
opportunity to understand and use a natural leadership style that
is truly effective in today's turbulent economic times.
There is a book that you might like to read called
the Leadership of the Sexes by Barbara Annis. An interesting discussion
followed and questions were answered.
Angela led us through an exercise of finding out
"who are we?" Using a series of questions we had to
work out whether we were Doves, Owls, Peacocks or Eagles.
For the afternoon workshop we split into groups
to look at Issues and solutions to problems within our club using
our new knowledge of our personality types of Doves, Owls, Peacocks
or Eagles.
For one of the afternoon sessions, a communications
person gave us an overview for clubs to do a strategic plan.
Sunday - Back into our groups to discuss Roles and
expectations within our clubs.
We then looked at the structure of BPW National, and International.
The remits and how they go from club level to international level
if suitable.
The afternoon concluded with "Moving Forward"
and "Putting it all together".
An interesting weekend.

Wellington in February is one of the best places to be and this
Leadership weekend is shaping up to be just that...especially
given that you can spend some of it with other like-minded women
to share and learn...and have some fun!
The keynote speaker, Pip Jamieson, is a real find. Pip has completed
research around women in leadership and her findings will inspire
you. Pip's style is interactive and the BPW NZ team look forward
to sharing in the discussion with you. For more information download
the attached file Whats a Girl To Do Feminine
or Feminist Leadership in NZ today (Feb 2010).pdf (file attached)
The weekend is around learning about each other, sharing our
issues and coming up with solutions. The Saturday workshops on
communication and strategic planning will give you the tools to
do those things with your club that you've always wanted to do
but never quite managed. What you learn will help you in your
professional relationships that you build in your paid work and
unpaid work.
We have built a partnership with PriceWaterhouseCoopers who are
providing the venue, providing professional support and also some
of their women staff will join us. This is great news, and of
course along with you, these PWC staff will add this to their
CV.
The most important thing is that we all work together to support
each other in achieving our goals the BPWNZ team would
love to see you in Wellington for the Leadership Forum so do come
and join us for a weekend of learning, sharing and fun.
Please note there is billeting
Leadership is forward planning.
Leadership is to use your skill to its full capacity.
Leadership is a holistic approach.
