Who are we?
We are the Business and Professional Women of Christchurch (BPW Christchurch) and we are affiliated to:
- The Federation of Business and Professional Women New Zealand (BPW New Zealand), formed in 1939,
- The International Federation of Business and Professional Women (formed in 1930) and have voting rights at the United Nations (since 1947).
Through this affiliation we join an estimated 30,000 women, from 100 countries world-wide where we work on issues that we take from a club level, to national conferences, international meetings and congresses to potentially present at the United Nations.
The Founding President Dr. Lena Madison Philips, who worked towards the establishment of BPW, travelled the world bringing women from all countries together said
“Let us build together and see what we can make.”

Our vision for BPW Christchurch is
“Women helping other women to be the best they can be!”
(YoungBPW Sandra Iskander, 2017)
Our mission for BPW Christchurch is:
To unite all women, from all walks of life, to meet with like-minded women, to discuss issues, hear from a broad range of speakers, mentor and network.
At BPW Christchurch, we meet on the second Tuesday of each month. We use this time to socialise, participate in a club meeting, listen to guest speakers, discuss issues and network.
We enjoy the monthly social interaction and the time to strengthen our network and discuss future business opportunities. There are also members who wish to become more involved in the national arena to develop their skills and to have a voice in making a difference for women and their families.
We are women of all ages and at different stages of our careers and experience. Our members include architects, business managers, social service providers, solicitors, students, teachers and real estate agents.
It is non-partisan, non-political, secular and we do not discriminate against age, race, diversity or religion. We are not a fundraising organisation, but we are about networking, mentoring and providing a safe environment for like-minded women to meet and discuss issues that affect them and their families.
We are also about education. Some of the skills we help our members develop include learning:
- the skills to run effective meetings
- the skills and role of a treasurer
- how to develop a media release
- public speaking skills and confidence
- how to prepare written and verbal submissions to government.
We want to hear your story:
We want to strengthen the message around gender equality, equal pay for equal work, removal of discrimination in the work place, respect for all cultures, migrant and refugee women and build upon the business diversity and skills that all women in NZ can bring into companies and on boards.
Working in collaboration with other women’s organisations we also see the strength where we can effect change as part of BPW NZ and using our voice in the submissions to the New Zealand government. We have member representation with:
• Women Empowerment Principles: Business Means Equality (WEPs)
• UN Women Aotearoa Canterbury.

Our founding members started working towards the re-established the BPW Christchurch club in 2015, following the successful BPW NZ Executive hosted Conference in May 2015.
They saw the importance of the work that the Federation of Business and Professional Women New Zealand (BPW NZ) were doing and wanted to provide a base from the South Island to actively work on issues that affect women in our communities.
Our founding members recognized BPW Christchurch’s ability to work collaboratively at a club level, to contribute to the governing body of our organization, which in turn could affect policy change from national to international.
At the BPW NZ’s 51st Annual Conference and Meeting (AGM) April 2016, BPW Christchurch was Affiliated with New Zealand. It was a special event, sharing the experience with women from around the world, including the BPW International Executive who attended the BPW NZ Asia-Pacific Regional Conference, following the AGM.
