President Janet - October 2026
Tena koutou katoa
Happy October to you all. It is our central body election time again. The three years go by fast, and the political landscape is constantly changing. Nationally we are subjected to overseas influences, and the volatility of global issues affects how we feel and how we vote.
Seventeen registered political parties and a total of 530 candidates will be contesting the 2026 General Election. BPW is an A-Political organisation. We are an advocacy organisation, but we look at policies and issues that predominantly affect women and children. Each voter will decide which candidate and party has the policies that represent their own ethos. If you are unsure then look at the vote compass survey – it may help you. www.votecompass.co.nz
Spring always brings hope and positivity with longer days and sunshine – it has been lovely weather of late. Time to reconnect with family and friends and look forward to holidays and Christmas. This past weekend I enjoyed a busy time catching up with many friends and family for brief conversations and sport watching plus music and discussions over a meal or a cuppa. It reminded me that life is about human beings – not just politics and work. So, take time to enjoy the company of others and if you are on different sides of the political spectrum don’t let it become an issue – we live in a democracy, and life will play out which ever way the votes fall on November 7th.
A friend of mine from a very different cultural background to me, recently posted on facebook: … Responsibility comes in different forms, for example as a parent we have responsibility to our babies, or as a worker for our job. If you follow Kaupapa you would often be tasked with a responsibility based on your Kaupapa. Point here is the word responsibility. Not only to our own future but that of the future generation. Let us think about the world we live in. Our babies are the future, and many are struggling. We have a responsibility to vote – regardless of who we vote for…
The point is that whatever we decide to do today, affects the generations to come. I am preaching to the converted, I am sure; however, I believe that we all value the democratic process and want what is best for our country. I know that several BPW clubs are holding meet the candidate meetings. Thank you for raising awareness in your communities. I hope the turnout at the polls is an increase from last time.
I look forward to meeting members at club meetings before the end of the year. I have visited Hawera, Kaitaia and then Gisborne in November.
