VP Issues Sherryll - Jul 26

One of the things I value most about my role as VP Issues is the opportunity to help ensure BPW NZ continues to be a strong, informed voice for women. This month has reminded me just how important that work is.

A significant focus has been the release and promotion of the Shortchanged podcast series on pay equity.

SHORTCHANGED - The Pay Equity Investigation is a satirical “true-crime investigation” of the events leading up to the Equal Pay Amendment Act 2025 and what happened next. We captured over 55 voices in the making of this podcast, including workers, economists, legal experts, activists, union leaders, Dames, and David Seymour. We’re hopeful that our storytelling will support the hard mahi undertaken by many in the sector and highlight the work of the People’s Select Committee on Pay Equity. We hope that these podcasts will play a part in ensuring that pay equity stays on the agenda as we head into the national election.

Like many of you, I have followed the pay equity changes closely over the past year, and this podcast captures not only the facts but also the human stories behind them. It is a powerful reminder that pay equity is not simply about wages—it is about recognising the value of women's work and ensuring future generations are not left fighting the same battles.

I encourage every member to take the time to listen to the series. It is informative, thought-provoking and, at times, deeply moving. If it resonates with you, please share it with others. The more people who understand what has happened and why it matters, the stronger our collective voice becomes.

I want to sincerely thank everyone who continues to answer calls for feedback, contribute ideas, review submissions and share information with others. Our advocacy is never the work of one person. It is strengthened by the collective knowledge, experience and commitment of members across the country.

Please continue to keep an eye out for Calls to Action and opportunities to become involved. Whether you write a submission, attend a consultation, share a resource or simply start a conversation, every action helps ensure BPW NZ remains a respected and influential advocate for gender equality. Together, we really do make a difference.
