Pay Equity
In September, Franklin, Central Hawke’s Bay, and BPW NZ presented their submissions to the People’s Select Committee on Pay Equity. Our presentations were well received, with committee members engaging thoughtfully and asking insightful questions.
In our submissions, we called for stronger accountability mechanisms and the formal establishment of a State of Pay Equity Report to be produced annually. We were encouraged by the Select Committee to research this idea and report back to them. We emphasised the importance of transparent data collection, consistent evaluation, and clear government responsibility for addressing gender pay gaps across all sectors.
Each oral presentation reflected the voices of our members and showcased the strength of BPW NZ’s grassroots policy development. Together, these contributions reinforced BPW’s reputation as a credible and influential advocate for women in policy and equity discussions.
Online Forum – 12 October 2025
Our recent BPW NZ Online Forum on 12th October provided an opportunity for members to connect, share insights, and build advocacy skills.
The workshops were well represented and feedback and discussion invaluable. In my group, I co-presented with Helen Baucke. The discussion focused on pay equity history and the current status quo and storytelling—how to use real-world examples to communicate complex issues in relatable and persuasive ways. Members explored comparisons between occupations of police officers and librarians examining how gendered expectations and undervaluation affect pay and recognition. The forum was insightful, and empowering—reminding us that storytelling remains one of the most effective tools for advocacy and change.
Looking Ahead
As we move toward the end of the year, our focus will remain on monitoring government responses to key issues, supporting local clubs to engage in advocacy, and preparing for BPW NZ’s upcoming policy review cycle.
Members are encouraged to stay informed, participate in future discussions, and continue championing BPW’s mission: Advancing the status of all women through advocacy, education, and empowerment.
