Overview
Since 1987 BPW Franklin has presented a one-off cash Study Award to assist a woman with connections to the Franklin community striving to build on their potential. The 2027 recipient will be a woman who has connections with Franklin or is a past or present resident of the Franklin area, and who is undertaking a course at a recognised University, Polytechnic or College of Education in New Zealand or retraining following an absence from employment.
The bursary is awarded to the woman who best shows she has achieved and is continuing to achieve in her chosen study and / or career, who shows she needs this monetary support to continue her studies, who contributes to her community through service such as volunteering to community groups and who has the personality to represent BPW Franklin and its ideals.
The 2027 Study Award be in the region of $3,000.

2026 Bursary Recipient Paige
Kia ora, I’m Paige!
I’m currently in my fifth year of Medicine at the University of Auckland, having previously completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science specialising in Neuroscience.
I was born and raised across South Auckland, attending Sandspit Road School and Rosehill College. I am the first in my extended family to attend medical school. My parents both work for the New Zealand Police, and growing up I admired the sense of purpose they found in serving their community. Their example played a big part in my decision to pursue medicine, and I hope to eventually return to Middlemore Hospital and give back to the community I
grew up in.
Outside of medicine, I have always loved sports. Previously, I was a competitive track and field athlete, winning three national titles in the 300m and 400m hurdles. These days you’ll usually find me at the gym, playing netball, hiking or camping.
Receiving the $3,000 BPW Bursary in 2025 was a huge help. As a seventh-year university student, the costs of rent, textbooks and travelling to clinical placements really add up! The bursary significantly eased that financial pressure and allowed me to focus more of my energy on my studies and clinical training. I am incredibly grateful to BPW for their support and would strongly encourage other ambitious young women to apply.
2025 Bursary Recipient Kate
My name is Kate Groshinski, and I was honored to receive the BPW Franklin Bursary Award in 2024 as I prepared to enter the final year of my Bachelor of Education.
Heading into my final year of university studies, the financial pressure of fees weighed heavily on me. I was extremely grateful to receive the BPW Bursary, providing relief at a critical point in my studies. Beyond the incredible financial support, winning this award gave me a huge boost in confidence, knowing that a community of dedicated and inspiring women believed in my potential and were supporting me along my journey.
Thanks to the generosity of BPW Franklin, I was able to focus fully on completing my degree. Today, I am working full-time as a Primary School teacher right here in the Franklin area.
This is the career I have always dreamed of, and getting to work with Franklin kids everyday is a privilege. I am deeply grateful to BPW Franklin for helping make my dream a reality. I will always be thankful for their investment in my future and their continued commitment to empowering women in our community.
2024 Bursary Recipient Willow
Hello! I’m Willow,
I am a third-year medical student at the University of Auckland and the proud
recipient of the 2023/2024 Franklin Bursary Award. Receiving this award helped make my university dreams come true. With the exorbitant cost of university fees and accommodation presenting a major challenge, this award provided valuable financial support, but also the confidence to pursue my goals and believe in my place within STEM.
I feel incredibly honoured to represent my hometown at such a prestigious institution and to be pursuing a career in a field where female representation is of growing importance.
Through the connections I have made on this journey, I have developed an even stronger appreciation for the importance of community, and for supporting and uplifting other women in STEM.
The award has not only facilitated my journey into medicine, but also reiterated the importance of creating opportunities and celebrating female success. I am incredibly grateful to be part of a community that encourages young women to pursue their ambitions.
